About Asklepio ry
Asklepio ry is the student association for students in the programme in (Bio)Medical Engineering and Health Technology at the University of Turku. Founded in 2022, we're a young, welcoming, and growing community that supports the academic, social, and professional development of our members. Our community brings together students from diverse backgrounds. We also have tight and active relations with other health technology student associations all around Finland.
The Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering and Health Technology is currently offered only in Finnish, and it started the same year our guild was founded. That's why many of our events and activities are still mainly in Finnish. However, we are gradually working towards making our community more multilingual. This is especially important since the Master's degree in Health Technology includes an English track alongside the Finnish ones.
We organize a wide range of events throughout the year: social gatherings, academic excursions, interdisciplinary collaborations, and more. Sustainability, circular economy, and ethical working life are also key themes we promote in our activities.
The association's goal is to assist and support its members with their graduate engineering studies and to offer them fun and interesting activities and events. The association's educational affairs person works together with IT departments staff to determine the content, quality and schedule of the education that our members receive.
Board
Asklepio is governed by a board, which is led by the chair of the board and eight other members (vice chair, secretary, treasurer, educational affairs, event organizers, external affairs, communications, and freshmen affairs). In the fall's general meeting, the members of Asklepio elect the board for the next year. Any member of Asklepio may apply for the positions. You can contact the board via email: hallitus@asklepio.fi
If you have any problems or questions about the guild activities, you can contact our international affairs representative, Milana Misukka. You can reach her directly at milana.misukka@asklepio.fi

Common guidance
These things cannot be forgotten:
Enroll to the university and to the student union well in advance, preferably at least a week before the studies start. You will get your utu.fi account in time and your student status will surely be registered right. More info at University of Turku's website.
Order your student card from Frank. With your student card you can get many discounts from which the most important is student lunch which costs 2,95 euros.
If you don't live in Turku or very close to Turku, start finding your own apartment during summer. There is a reasonable amount of student apartments in Turku. The biggest provider is TYS. There are also fair priced rental apartments on the private market.
Remember to take advantage of the student lunch. 2,95 euros isn't much for a decent meal where bread and salad are included in the price.
Take the studies seriously right from the start. The pace is hard to catch up.
Learn how to use a calendar. It will help you with deadlines.
Get actively involved in the activities! During your time at the university, you have an opportunity to meet great people. You should not miss that opportunity. Here you will definitely find life-time friends.
Vocabulary
Guild (fi: kilta) is a student organization that brings together students studying the same field. The Guild organizes events for its members and takes care of its students' rights. The Guild of biomedical engineering and health technology students is Askelpio ry, and the members are called "Asko".
Fuksi is a first-year university student. Freshman is not a commonly used word in Turku and instead this word, fuksi, is used.
Teekkari is an engineering student that has taken part in the teekkari dipping, which is a tradition within engineering students of Turku during 1st of May.
Guildroom (fi: kiltahuone) is a hangout space for guild members. Asklepio's guildroom is located in the cellar of the Agora (K124B) and there you can for example buy overall patches or come to hang out between lectrues.
Overalls (fi: haalarit) are students' favorite outfit in almost any event. Students of the same field have overalls of the same colour. Asklepio's overalls are white and they have a texts color of lavender. Overalls will be ordered during the first weeks of study (autumn), and usually they arrive at the end of year at the latest. The overalls cost 15-20€ euros, note that you must also be a member of the Asklepio (5 € per 1 year OR 20 € per 5 years). You should place the overall order in the first weeks based on instructions that is sended in the mailing list.
Tutors and fuksi responsible take care of first-year students and organize events for them.Teekkari cap and masterpass
A student of technology can be recognized by the teekkari cap. The teekkari cap is a white cap with a tassel. It may be worn from April 30th to September 30th. More information about teekkari cap you can found here.
A teekkari cap must be earned before it can be worn on Wappu. To earn the cap, a freshman has to collect a sufficient number of entries in the freshman pass and complete the Eldprowet, the checkpoint tour held during Wappu. The teekkari cap costs about €120–140 with the TYY cockade. The cap is self-funded and is ordered at the beginning of the year.
The freshman pass is a paper booklet you can obtain from a board member. It contains various tasks to be completed throughout the year. These tasks introduce students to teekkari culture and to the activities of their own guild. By completing the pass, it is easy to get acquainted with the activities organized by student associations from many angles and to find one's own interests in student life—whether that be sports, parties, or organizing them. The required points vary from year to year but are generally the same.
The mandatory points of the freshman pass must be completed in order to receive the teekkari cap and the title of teekkari on Wappu. In addition, hobby points can be collected. Missing points may be compensated for by applying for additional points. Ultimately, it is every freshman's own responsibility to remember to ask for points on time! Collecting the mandatory points should especially be started already during the autumn semester so that spring's rush doesn't catch you off guard right before the capping!
Freshman pass points can be awarded by a member of Asklepio ry's board, the year's tutor, or a member of the Teekkari Commission board. Please note that only board members who already have the teekkari cap can give points.
For questions regarding the freshman pass, you can contact the freshman representative of Asklepio's board.
